Composition and lighting are just the beginning. Truly memorable portraits tell a story. One that draws the viewer in and makes them think. It’s either that or they’ll just swipe to the next photo.
Over 4 days you’ll learn the art of photographic storytelling. Our studio will be a charming 400-year-old colonial building. Here, we’ll learn how to manipulate light and composition into engaging stories. We’ll work on 2 pre-planned photoshoots: including a stunning Day of the Dead concept.
The next Oaxaca workshop will be in December 2023. Sign up to the Wait List now!

Oaxaca is where I first fell in love with Mexico. It’s a city that has found a harmonious balance between the modern and traditional worlds. It’s people, young and old, enthusiastically take to the streets on a seemingly never-ending schedule of festivals. These events bring together communities from all over the region, dressed in beautiful and intricate traditional outfits. And all of this happens under the shadow of Monte Alban: the ruins of one of the great founding cities of Meso-America. Oaxaca can be a pretty magical place!
On this workshop, we’ll be working with some of my favorite Oaxacan models. We’ll get to know them, their customs and the history behind their intricate outfits – because knowing your subject is the first step to making great cultural portraits.
But that is just the beginning. We’ll venture out onto the cobbled streets of Oaxaca, bringing our models and lighting kit, as we visit some of my favorite locations. We will also set up a pop-up studio in the middle of a street festival, taking downs of portraits. This is the best way to put your new skills into practice and end up with dozens of great portraits! Then on the last day, we’ll drive out into the surrounding countryside and use the picturesque Sierra Madre mountains as a backdrop to our final sunset shoot.
We’ve put together a photography workshop that showcases the amazing history, traditions, and people of Oaxaca. It's the workshop I've wanted to create for almost a decade!
