Why It Pays to Go Against The Tide

HERMOSA BEACH

To go against or disagree with a prevailing or popularly held opinion or perspective; to act or behave contrary to the majority of others.

Sometimes you get much better photos if you go against the tide (sorry, pun intended!).

I took this photo of Hermosa Pier on one of our last nights in LA. The sun was putting on an amazing light show but I felt that the photo I was about to take had been taken thousands of times (a later Google search confirmed this).

Instead, I walked ankle deep into the water, opened up the shutter speed (to blow out the sunset) and started experimenting. Eventually settling on this composition.

I’m going out today to try new things with my camera. It’s easy to strive to get great photos you’ve seen but more rewarding to create your own!
