Let Inspiration Guide Your Travel Schedule
I often find my travel schedule dictated sub-contiously by the work of photographers I admire. The recent trip to Iceland was gently nudged into being by the dramatic minimalist compositions of Bruce Percy. Vietnam, almost certainly by the haunted beauty of Steve McCurry‘s portraiture of the region.
Cambodia, The New Vietnam
It was, in fact, one of Steve’s photos that convinced me to portion out some of the Vietnam trip to include Cambodia. The photo was a beautiful composition of 2 monks in a temple near Ankor Wat. At the time I knew very little about the country, it’s horrific recent history, or the resilient character of its people.
Cambodia, it turns out, is exactly what I imagined Vietnam would be. It epitomises the classic postcard imagery of saturated green rice fields and smiling weather worn locals. Mass tourisms corrupting tentacles have barely reached into the country.
Vietnam, on the other hand, has lost a lot of its heritage to the Western culture bulldozer. Paddy fields have made way for KFCs. Progress perhaps. Photogenic, not so much.
Cambodia was an inspiration to me. I can’t wait to return.
